The size makes it approachable and easy to read in a short time, too.

Medically Useful, Personally Dry. * In general, this book helped me and my partner to understand the basic clinical facts and some lesser known clinical information about herpes, transmission, symptoms, treatment, etc. * Re: transmission: The author offers perspectives which surprisingly contradict some commonly held ideas about what is "safe" and "not safe", which makes this book particularly useful, if not a bit scarey. * Re: legal issues: The section on disease transmission and the ethics of disclosure is also well done and important. The author cites a case where someone who was lied to about a partner#039s STD status was awarded $600,000 in damages for pain and suffering, given the lifetime effects of herpes transmitted without honest disclosure. * Re: approach and tone: The book#039s appeal would have been increased with a more personal tone, with the author#039s voice addressed to us folks out here grappling with these difficult issues, and often at risk from partial knowledge and word-of-mouth guidelines. As it is the book is rather dispassionate, as if the busy physician author had transcribed a series of medical school lectures. * Re: also needed: Colored photographs of what typical outbreaks look like would have been very useful, as an addition to his useful black white line drawings of virus transmission details. A good bit more could also have been provided about details of "safer sex" and relationship issues since we most need that out here in the real world. * Re: bottom line: As a clinical medical fact source it is an excellent and useful book.

<!- link2 ->This book is aimed at anyone who wants to needs to know more about herpes simplex viruses, two complex microbes capable of causing a variety of infections including genital herpes, a common chronic sexually transmitted disease.

http://www.herpessimplex1.org

A book to be read by everybody. What a great book to finish this year. This is the history of viruses, those nanoparticles wrapped up in protein, a history of smallpox, polio, herpes, hepatitis, flu, Human T Leukaemia Virus, HIV and others little viruses that have made difficult our existence. But this book is more than that, a book to understand how this virus operate, their relation with cancer, how we have combated them via immunization, vaccines and antivirals, and the amazing advances in dealing with them, including the use of viruses to deal with cancer.
There is much more to understand about viruses, the purpose of them, an effort that perhaps allows to understand life itself. This is a book to be read by everybody, a book that should have a spanish version and be given to high school/University students. Prevention is the first step.

Amazing. I assumed this would be another text book style read consisting of sterile, bare bones info. I was very pleasantly surprised. This book is increadible. It reads like a novel and yet the info is present in every sentence. The author is clearly beyond knowledgable about the topic. I would recommend this book to anyone . Truely amazing!

Nice book. This is a nice book about viruses. The book is slightly technical, but reading it while able to access wikipedia should do it, if you want to understand each detail.

Recently I came across a theory came which says that viruses played a crucial role in the evolution of humans. After reading this book the above theory made sense to me.

Understanding viruses. "The Invisble Enemy" is a very good overview of the world of viruses. Virologist Dorothy H. Crawford has written a book that is scientific, but it is also interesting, enjoyable, and very readable. In fact, I became so immersed while reading the book that I felt that I was reading a historical novel and not a book on the science of viruses. But that is what is so enjoyable about this book - Ms. Crawford weaves together interesting tales, scientific data and her thoughts on viruses in a way that helped me to understand these primitive proteins and their impact on the history and evolution of the human race.

Throughout the book there is information about the history of a variety of killer viruses such as yellow fever and polio and the vaccines that were developed to eradicate them. There is also information about the origins of HIV - how HIV infects a cell and the ways that HIV drugs interfere with the replication process. Also information is included on hepatitis A, hepatitis B and a little information on hepatitis C. There is also an overview of the emerging killer viruses such as ebola, hanta virus, and the bird flu.

After reading this book I came away with a better understanding of viruses and their remarkable ability to survive.

Fascinating, less complicated introduction to the current issue of emerging viruses. Probably the only reason I gave this a four star is because the book was a repeat basically for me of information I#039d already read more completely somewhere else. That#039s not to say I didn#039t think this book was interesting. The Writer is British, and most all the books I read were from American writers. Her writing is impeccable as per usual with the British, but also there is a distinctly different point of view.

I would highly recommend this book for people who want a good introduction into the area of virology. It applies to everyone, since emerging and man-made viruses are such a threat at this point. The book doesn#039t overdo the scientific jargon you find in textbooks, and makes the science accessible to everyone who reads the book. It addresses most of the past big problems, introduces some emerging problems like Ebola...but this is very general. That can be a good thing...I just wanted some more information than what I got.

Karen Sadler

<!- link2 ->In 1969 the US Surgeon General confidently declared, "We can now close the book on infectious diseases." The advent of AIDS has proven him spectacularly wrong, and in recent years the world has witnessed infectious outbreaks of other highly lethal viruses such as Hanta, Ebola, and Lassa fever. Flu strains are getting stronger and stronger each year. But what, exactly, is a virus How does it work And what is the best way to fight it
In Invisible Enemy, Dorothy Crawford offers clear answers to these and many other questions. She shows precisely how viruses, with their amazing ability to mutate, have caused devastating diseases in the past, and continue to pose one of the greatest challenges to science. A virus is disarmingly small and simple-a minute piece of genetic material wrapped in a protein coat. And yet it can cause major chaos. Smallpox killed over 300 million people in the twentieth century before it was eradicated in 1980 at that time, measles still killed two and half million children a year and the HIV virus is now the leading cause of death in Africa. Crawford lucidly explains all aspects of these deadly parasites and discusses controversial subjects such as CFS and Gulf War Syndrome. She goes on to consider how we#039ve coped with viruses in the past, where new viruses come from, and whether a new virus could wipe out the human race.
For anyone seeking a deeper understanding of these remarkably efficient killers, Invisible Enemy provides a compelling account of their history, their effects on us, and their possible future.Though the Berlin Wall has fallen, we find ourselves still struggling with an even older enemy in the eternal Common Cold War. Virologist Dorothy H. Crawford has studied the link between Epstein-Barr virus and human cancer for years, and she casts a wary eye through the electron microscope to check up on them and report on our strange and occasionally deadly symbiosis in The Invisible Enemy.
This slim book, scholarly but accessible, examines these barely living (or unliving, depending on whom you ask) gene packages with a strong emphasis on their disease-causing antics and the intellectual heroics of the various campaigns of eradication and control humans have waged for centuries. Though biological relativists might cringe occasionally at Crawford#039s dogged humanocentrism, few of them would really pine for the days of smallpox or embrace the raging HIV pandemic if pressed. Crawford looks at the wake of devastation left by these two viruses as well as her own favorite subject, which is strongly implicated in the formation of many cancers. Going a bit farther afield, she explains the weird behavior of the nongenetic reproduction of prions that cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy though these scary proteins aren#039t viruses by any definition, their behavior is similar enough to warrant inclusion. The Invisible Enemy, calmer than its title would suggest, provokes a sense of optimism in the reader. A common misconception is that a person’s body becomes resistant to specific drugs. However, it is microbes, not people that become resistant to the drugs. Drug resistance happens when microbes develop ways to survive the use of medicines meant to kill or weaken them. If a microbe is resistant to many drugs, treating the infections it causes can become difficult or even impossible. Someone with an infection that is resistant to a certain medicine can pass that resistant infection to another person. In this way, a hard-to-treat illness can be spread from person to person. In some cases, the illness can lead to serious disability or even death.

This comprehensive, up-to-date volume aims to define issues and potential solutions to the challenges of antimicrobial resistance. The chapter authors are leading international experts on antimicrobial resistance among a variety of bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae, enteroccoci, staphylococci, gram-negative bacilli, mycobacteria species) viruses (HIV, herpesviruses), and fungi (Candida species, fusarium etc.). The chapters will explore the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance, the immunology and epidemiology of resistance strains, clinical implications and implications on research and lack thereof, and prevention and future directions. This volume will also describe the steps that researchers are taking to develop molecular methods for detecting resistance develop drugs and other means to deal with newly-resistant organisms. A special chapter to address the issues on strategies to limit antimicrobial resistance propagation will be included in this volume.

http://www.herpessimplex1.org

http://www.herpessimplex1.org

While the molecular mechanisms of antibody production and diversity and of cellular specific immune responses have been studied since many decades, the actions of viruses blocking and modifying the innate immune system, i.e. mainly the interferon (IFN) response and its various signaling pathways, have been recognized and studied in more detail only during the last 10-15 years. Viruses can counteract defense strategies of infected cells, and specific proteins of many viruses were found to act as IFN antagonists.

In this book a number of groups leading this area of research have presented reviews and updates of their research. In the introductory chapter M. Shaw and P. Palese review the IFN signaling pathways and provide a comprehensive list of virus-encoded proteins that target different components of the pathways of the IFN response. It is then reviewed how viruses elicit the IFN production (D.E. Levy and I.J. Marié), how IFN regulatory genes are induced by viruses (group of G.C. Sen), how viruses have `learned#039 to evade immune mechanisms, interfering with MHC mediated antigen presentation, blockage of apoptosis, mimicking of cytokines and cellular receptors, or by direct infection of immune cells (group of H.L. Ploegh). In additional chapters, the virus-encoded IFN antagonists of particular viruses are described, such as of influenzaviruses (A. Garcia-Sastre), paramyxoviruses (group of R.E. Randall), herpes simplex virus (S.J. Advani and B. Roizman), poxviruses (J.B. Johnston and G. McFadden), filoviruses, bunyaviruses and flaviviruses (C.F. Basler). For poxviruses, the mechanisms of molecular mimikry, i.e. viral proteins binding to cytokines or cytokine receptors, are of particular interest. A new area of research is the involvement of toll-like receptors in the activation of pathways of the innate immune response and of their interaction with viral proteins (S.R. Ross). Autophagy is a protective mechanism of mammalian cells that can be targeted by viral virulence gene products (group of B. Levine). Finally, the ways in which the genetic variation of hosts influences the susceptibility to viral infections is reviewed in a short chapter with particular attention to infection with HIV (E. Choi and S. Chanock).

There is minimal overlap between the different chapters, and the references are very up-to-date (a considerable number of them published in 2004). In several chapters the years of publication of references are omitted for no obvious reasons. Some chapters would have benefited from the presence of illustrations and tables.

This book is an excellent, up-to-date reference on a relatively young area of research in which virology, cellular biology and molecular pathogenesis govern the principles of coinvestigation. Thus, the book will be of great interest to virologists, molecular immunologists and biologists, and biochemists but also to clinical pharmacologists in the long-term search for new antiviral agents.

The outcome of this interaction is influenced by the genes of the virus as well as the genes of the host. Interestingly, different viruses do it in different ways. Not only is there a plethora of mechanisms used by the invading organisms, but the host has also evolved a great variety of redundant and robust countermeasures. This interplay of host and virus represents one of the most significant frontiers in biology today. A clearer understanding of the mechanisms involved will arm us with better strategies to deal with viruses, including emerging pathogens and potential bioterrorism agents. This book is sure to benefit students, scientists, and physicians working in the areas of virology, immunology, microbiology, and infectious diseases. Pharmaceutical industry professionals will also find interest in this illuminating look into virus/host interactions.

http://www.herpessimplex1.org

The development of gene transfer methods which are suitable for different forms of therapy has been a major topic of research over the past several years. A common goal of this research has been to achieve the efficient delivery of genes into cells. The successful implementation of gene transfer as a cure for diseases, however, will continue to require the translation of preclinical studies in gene therapy into effective clinical protocols. In this volume, the editor compiled the latest developments in cancer treatment using various gene delivery systems, which include cytokine gene transfer, delivery of anti-ras DNA by retroviral vector and the injection of allogeneic HLA DNA via liposomes. Several of these molecular approaches have recently been approved by the US FDA as human clinical trial protocols in order to assess their therapeutic safety for cancer treatment. Further developments in recombinant DNA technology in this field will ultimately lead to dramatic improvements in the practice of medicine.

http://www.herpessimplex1.org

Certainly the only text I have found in the field to present a technologically up-to-date, user-friendly and endearingly logical approach to the field of keratology. Relatively brief, strategically illustrated to aid understanding, and very readable, this book eliminates the unnecessary fog that can surround the practice of this field through teaching and then applying important principles onto which selective details are added. I was reassured that the single author is a professor and eminent expert in the field, and in fact this is one of those works where having a single author benefits its uniformity simply as Coster presents a unified way of thinking throughout. Any reader will need to use a more didactic text from time to time to add some additional facts to this text. However the book succeeds in translating the ins and outs of specialised management of corneal and external diseases management for non corneal sub-specialists. The no-nonsense text makes the intricacies of managing corneal disease, both before and after surgery, together with a guide to operative surgery, accessible to all ophthalmologists. Coster is to be congratulated for being generous and humble enough to present and transmit his experience as a highly respected corneal sub-specialist as a skill that can be learned and effectively practised by the non corneal specialist.

<!- link2 ->The cornea is the ecosystem that connects the internal with the external eye. Defects and disorders in this delicate layer of tissue are frequent, painful and potentially damaging to the internal functioning of the eye. Outstanding colour illustrations provide added diagnostic information.
Written by leading international specialists in the cornea, this book joins the Fundamentals in Clinical Ophthalmology series as an ideal reference for all practising ophthalmologists, and those in specialist training.

Related Products :

Review of Ophthalmology: Expert Consult - Online and Print

<!- link3 -> http://www.herpessimplex1.org

I read this book just after "The Potbelly Syndrome". They cover similar ground but this author has a medical background (to me that is not necessarily a good thing given the drugs-are-wonderful blinkers of the medical profession). Both books provide an alternative view, claiming that many health problems and degenerative diseases are actually due to long-term infections, often in chronic form that the standard tests fail to identify and that (therefore) most doctors ignore or even deny.

Physicians are reluctant to accept that standard tests might not be foolproof and even more reluctant to accept that the same type of bacteria and viruses present in healthy people could cause a variety of diseases in sick people, even though almost all healthy people eventually die of the same diseases, such as cancer, heart or kidney disease, and stroke (see PS below).

Chlamydia Pneumoniae (not the same as the sexually-transmitted form of Chlamydia, it has thus recently been renamed to Chlamydophila pneumoniae) is the most mentioned in both books, although there are many others that could be relevant. It is for this radical departure from the usual viewpoint that I have given it the two stars although this book disappoints in the long run. It takes over 300 pages to explain the problem then there are less than 5 pages to explain the "advanced treatment" which consists mainly of - wait for it - repeated rounds of antibiotic treatment!

The proven counterproductive aspects of antibiotics are completely ignored and no success stories (either anecdotal or research-based) are provided for this "solution". In 2005 researchers reported that, in acne patients, antibiotic users are twice as likely to get an upper respiratory tract infection within a year the Feb. 18, 2004 issue of "The Journal of the American Medical Association" provides evidence that long-term antibiotic use is linked to increased breast cancer risks (and they haven#039t yet researched other cancers in the same way) in children antibiotic treatment has been associated with increased risk of recurrences these are just three bits of the ever-mounting evidence that antibiotics are dangerous yet this book offers antibiotics as the answer! Words fail me.

The book indicates antiviral treatment may also be necessary and then touches briefly on fungal infections but does not recommend antifungal treatment. (No mention is made of parasites in either book to me this is a worrying oversight.) To my further surprise and disappointment, this book also recommends daily aspirin, a "treatment" that has been proved dangerous, and then repeats the usual (useless) diet and exercise BS we#039ve been getting for decades.

Basically, this book claims to cover improved treatments for the most prevalent chronic infections but does not. Where the "The Potbelly Syndrome" is so much better - although it too provides no real solution - is that it goes way beyond this, providing some of the evidence that the "lose weight exercise" mantra is useless advice and looking at more up-to-date alternatives.

Also worth reading is Alan Cantwell#039s "Four Women Against Cancer" which explains how CWD bacteria - they can live without having a cell wall and therefore act more like a virus - cause cancer and how, since this bacteria is inside the cancer cells, tests don#039t find them and anti-microbial treatments (both natural and synthetic antibiotics, antifungals, antiprotozoals, and antivirals) do not cure cancer. This and the similar theory in The Heart Attack Germ book may be the underlying basis for many incurable health problems.

P.S. There are a few other books on this point: "The Inflammation Cure" by Meggs and Svec, "The Inflammation Syndrome" by Challem (dietary remedies only, in this one), "Stopping Inflammation" by Appleton (food again, particularly sugar, dairy and wheat as the bad guys), "Inflammation Nation" by Chilton (good and bad fats), and "The Anti-Inflammation Zone" by Sears (nutrition again) all appeared in 2003/4/5 - and all discuss the role of inflammation in the major diseases of our time, and some of the things that one can do to limit inflammation.

All those books are also fairly easy to read but, as I know too well after more than a decade of careful nutrition, none really has a complete solution for the problem - nor can I find anything more recent that might have offered newer/better advice even though there#039s more and more evidence to back up the book#039s claims - in 2009 one report suggests that high blood pressure could be caused by a common virus, known as CMV, affecting between 60 and 99 per cent of adults worldwide, and that it is also linked to kidney disease, stroke and even cancer.

I suspect one of the reasons is that all these books on chronic inflammation are looking at fairly conventional solutions and have since found a number of books on the effectiveness of herbal antibiotics: two books called "Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics" by Chaitow and McKenna respectively, "Herbal Antibiotics" by Buhner, and "The Antiobiotic Alternative" by Jones. I am hopeful that they may have an answer for this apparently insoluble chronic infection situation.

I tried Lugol#039s (safe, inexpensive, non-invasive, and simple), having already highly rated "Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can#039t Live Without It" by Dr David Brownstein in the context of thyroid and recently realising that Dr Brownstein also wrote that "No virus, bacteria or parasite has been shown to be resistant to iodine therapy" but it did not make a noticeable difference in this respect. I have since tried Vitamin D (esp D3) which I think IS working!

I would also recommend reading "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms" which explains that fatigue, weight gain, foggy mind, etc may well be an autoimmune disease, not a primary thyroid problem.

A germ not to be fooled with. This is an informative and well written book about the notorious Heart Attack Germ also known as Chlamydia pneumonia and how it relates to heart attacks, Alzheimer disease and other symptoms in the body. The author is a retired physician and surgeon who explains in detail and at times with a sense of humor what we all should know about our body. He covers everything from doctor office visits to lab work, preventative medicine and the detailed illustrations throughout the book make it easy for the non-medical reader to understand.

I highly recommend this book.

I really liked the way the author. I really liked the way the author gives an overview and then discusses in detail all the different aspects of incidents. This book is not really for physicians, but I appreciated the practical aspects of the content and think families that have been affected by an incident would benefit from reading it.

Highly Informative Helpful. "The Heart Attack Germ" packs a wealth of information into its pages. I#039d read a little about the idea that infection causes (or at least may contribute to) heart disease, but I couldn#039t find a book on the topic until I came across this one. The authors tell you everything you need to know about this new theory and the research data that support it. There#039s also a detailed section on exactly what your doctor is looking for during an office visit - all those mysterious things like patting your back and telling you to cough are explained in detail. The book is well-written, in a breezy, conversational style with a sense of humor. If you want to know more about this emerging new view of heart disease and what it may mean for you, I recommend "The Heart Attack Germ."

<!- link2 ->Perhaps you#039ve read about the Heart Attack Germ in Reader#039s Digest. But The Heart Attack Germ is the first and only book that reveals the full story behind this astonishing and revolutionary medical breakthrough.

A germ named Chlamydia pneumoniae has been identified by medical researchers the world over as the Heart Attack Germ. People infected by this germ are at a significantly increased risk for stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular problems, including the symptoms of Alzheimer#039s disease. Several other common bacteria and viruses have also been associated with an increased risk of stroke and heart attack. All of these germs are contagious and easily transmitted from person to person.
